Global Institute for Energy and Environmental Systems (GIEES)
Profile
The Global Institute for Energy and Environmental Systems (GIEES) of the
University of North Carolina at Charlotte is an emerging multi-disciplinary, and
cross-college research institute that is organized to:
Conduct cross-disciplinary research
and provide technical support to local, state and federal agencies on
environmental issues pertinent to urban/regional growth, energy infrastructure
development, industrial activities and natural disaster mitigation;
Establish
strong and mutually beneficial collaborations on projects with the private
sector, public agencies, community-based organizations and academic
institutions;
Develop
research and allied program links with institutions within and outside the
United States on critical energy and environmental issues, and lead consortia of
universities internationally, in collaborative research and professional
activities under the auspices of national and international agencies such as the
United Nations and the World Health Organization;
Enhance the
capacities of traditional academic departments at UNC Charlotte to provide high
quality research experience to students on critical environmental and energy
issues through their involvement in cross-disciplinary research and associate at
the institute;
Operate
professional development, outreach and technology transfer activities such as
seminar series, international conferences, colloquia and exchange programs,
which in combination with intensive research on policy and scientific issues and
the instructional programs of academic departments, will establish UNC Charlotte
as a leading university in integrated analyses of energy and environmental
systems.
